My work is the exploration of an idea and the process involved in art making often leads me to the next idea. These images are inspired by the surrounding environment and some of them have been embedded in my mind long ago. They are the language I use to communicate how I feel in my mind; they often express human solitude, stillness, powerlessness, fragility. I arrange various environments and take sets for photographs which I later use as a reference for my paintings. The pieces “Correlation” and “Mutual Need” explore the marionette-like codependence of one part to another, resembling actual human relations. “Water Vessel” is inspired by the fact that the human body consists mainly of water. My model for this piece had a very difficult time keeping his mouth wide open while full of water. Water held suspended in the mouth is neither in nor out, defining body as vessel that holds elemental self. The concept for this painting is similar to the one for “Sunken Flowers”. In both the water has a dual role of a source of life and a possible cause of death. For the series “Ice Distortions” and “Water Distortions”, I placed a glass sheet with water running down on it and a frozen sheet of transparent ice in front of my face and took multiple pictures. I often combine 2-3 photographs to create the paintings’ compositions. I studied the natural optical distortions caused by water and ice. My face is the subject for these studies without being factual self-portraits. I am after unusual settings and images that look like surreal but are in fact real. There are a lot of thoughts and feelings that cross my mind during the process of painting. I believe that many of them stay with the piece but I can never be sure how people interpret my art. I believe that art does have a life of its own away from the artist.
